Scoring a layup
Every planning choice changes the predicted defects, so comparing plans needs one number. The book's approach: set a threshold per defect type, measure how often (instance) and how badly (severity) each type exceeds it, weight the types by pairwise judgement (AHP), and score the ply as 1 minus the weighted sum. Then look through the thickness, because defects that stack matter more than any single ply's score.

Two plies, each scoring zero point nine. Can the laminate made from them still be bad?
Yes. Each ply can be fine on its own, and their defects can still land on top of each other. So the ply maps are combined through the thickness.
