The planner's 15 decisions
The process planner turns a design into a machine plan, and the plan is the biggest driver of cycle time and cost. The book breaks it into 15 functions, which fall into three groups: where the ply goes, how the courses run, how the machine moves. They compete, so planning is iterative, which is why it's being automated (CAPP).

Here's why the machine-motion decisions matter. Twenty courses, each a metre long, laid at twenty metres a minute, with five seconds of repositioning between courses. What fraction of the time is the head actually laying?
Only about a third. Laying takes sixty seconds. Moving between courses takes a hundred.
