Boundaries, ramps, where to start
The first planning decisions fix where material goes. The layup boundary separates what gets covered from what must stay clear, and is usually bigger than the part so the rough course ends can be trimmed off. Where plies stop, stagger the stops into a ramp instead of a cliff.

So, back to the starting point. Why does such a small choice matter so much?
Because everything is built from it. The starting point sets the first course, and on many surfaces it changes the reference curve itself. Every other course is propagated from there.
