Pattern number
The pattern number sets how many diamonds go round the circumference, and so how often the bands cross. More crossovers mean more crimp: a little less stiffness, more damage tolerance.

Same angle and thickness. Which tube absorbs more crash energy, pattern one or pattern seven?
Pattern seven. A crack that runs along a band gets to a crossover and has to change direction. The crossovers break the laminate into small cells, so damage spreads less, and the tube keeps taking energy as it crushes.

Simulations in this lesson are our own. Where a number rests on an assumption, the video marks it with an asterisk and says where it comes from.
