Closing a pattern
Each circuit lands its band a fixed step further around the equator. With N slots and a step s, the pattern visits every slot exactly once only when s and N share no common factor.

Twelve slots. A step of five covers all of them. What about a step of four?
Step four lands on four, eight, twelve, and then four again. Three slots, stacked thicker and thicker, and nine never touched. The rule: the step and the number of slots must share no common factor.
