The boss is where vessels die
Under pressure the dome edge rotates, and so does the boss, by its own amount. Where they disagree, bending stresses spike in the helicals at the boss edge, and repeated filling turns that into cracks and leaks. The best boss rotates with the dome: neither simply stiffer nor softer.

Stiffer boss, or softer boss: which one lowers the stress at the edge of the dome?
Neither, on its own. What matters is that the boss rotates with the dome, not against it. A boss that's too stiff pinches the composite; one that's too soft lets the dome pull it out of shape.
