Wider bands, thinner poles
Circuits go as 1/band width, so a wider band winds faster. But the band centre turns half a band outside the turnaround, so the thickness peak moves out and the region next to the boss thins; and a wide band's edges stray off the geodesic. Pick the widest band that still meets thickness at the boss.

Double the band width. Does the winding time halve?
Roughly, yes: half the circuits. But the thickness peak moves out, and the region right next to the boss gets thinner. Go too wide, and the dome near the boss ends up thinner than it needs to be.
