AFP+: the authors' vision
AFP+ is the authors' proposal for a smart AFP system, and it starts by refusing the buzzwords: define the terms (against the DoD baseline), then build a digital thread from day one: sensing → perception → decision → action. They propose four near-term functions: automated, material-independent process characterisation; course-based process placement; automated in-situ inspection with repair directives; and AFP feeding out-of-autoclave process chains. Process characterisation shows why automation matters: brute force grows as the power of the number of parameters, and smart sampling spends its tests where the answer is.

Four process parameters: heating, speed, compaction force, and tow tension. Five levels each. How many test panels to try every combination?
Five to the fourth: six hundred and twenty-five. Add a level and it's over twelve hundred. Brute force grows as a power of the number of parameters.

Simulations in this lesson are our own. Where the numbers are invented to show a mechanism, the video says so on screen.
