Count the axes
Each axis added to a winder makes a new family of shapes windable: spindle and carriage wind pipes; a cross feed and eye rotation make closed vessels practical; a six-axis robot opens shapes with no straight axis.

What's the minimum number of axes to wind a closed vessel, with a turnaround at the pole?
Two, in principle. Spindle and carriage can trace any geodesic on the vessel. But the eye stays out at the cylinder radius, far from the pole, and the free fibre swings about.
