LESSON 3.6 · 2:56 · CHAPTER 3 · PATHS ON CURVED SURFACES
Bending the rules
Non-geodesic paths, steered within the friction budget, widen the range of polar openings one cylinder angle can reach and let the angle drift along a cylinder: |Δ(1/sin α)| ≤ μ L / R.
Predict · at 0:57 in the video
Wet carbon, mu 0.1. A cylinder three radii long, at 30 degrees at one end. Can you reach 40 at the other?
No. One over sine 30 is two; one over sine 40 is 1.56. You need a change of 0.44.

About the numbers
Simulations in this lesson are our own. Where a number rests on an assumption, the video marks it with an asterisk and says where it comes from.
