Three ways to build an AFP cell
The head is the hand; the machine around it is the arm. There are three common arms: the vertical gantry (a huge Cartesian frame, most common in aerospace, for long parts like wings), the horizontal gantry (delivers sideways onto a rotating tool, for barrels, with room to inspect from the other side), and the robot (joints instead of axes: cheaper, faster to build, flexible). Whatever the arm, one small detail decides a lot of the quality: how far the tow travels from spool to roller.

Here's a design question. The spools of tow can sit far away on the frame, or close to the head. Which is better for quality?
Close to the head. A tow travelling from far away has to turn around guide after guide to reach the roller. Every redirect is a contact point, and every contact point is a chance for the tow to twist, to fold, or to rub off resin that builds up and eventually drops onto the part as debris.

Simulations in this lesson are our own. Where the numbers are invented to show a mechanism, the video says so on screen.
