You don't need 0 degree fibres
A winder can't lay fibre straight along the axis, and it doesn't need to: the axial stiffness of a ±α tube is flat near zero, so ±10° costs only about 8%. The stiffness collapses between 15° and 45°.
Predict · at 0:58 in the video
From zero to plus and minus 10 degrees, how much axial stiffness do you lose: 8 percent, 30, or 50?
About 8 percent: 124 gigapascals instead of 135. Near zero the curve is almost flat, so the first few degrees cost almost nothing. Double it to 20 degrees, though, and you've lost a third.
